Postmortem: the fiber cut that took down a region

Setup

A regional CDN edge serves a metro’s ISPs. It fills from a distant origin over a single point-to-point link — one fiber path, no diverse route. Everything works perfectly… until a construction crew several districts away puts a backhoe through the cable.

Timeline

Root cause

Not the backhoe — backhoes are a certainty, not a surprise. The root cause was architectural: a single-path mid-mile made the link a single point of failure, and the edge had no way to keep serving live without the origin. One cut, one region down.

The fixes

Why this matters more in India

As we’ve written in why Indian IPTV needs a different architecture, fiber cuts here are frequent enough that single-path anything is an operational liability, not a theoretical risk. A national design has to assume the cut will happen and route around it.
